Live Outside the Box

We’re in the middle of an exciting week of dress rehearsals for this weekend’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. While the whole church building has been transformed in many ways, it’s been heartwarming for me to witness, once again, the many transformations that happen in and through the participants in our annual all-church musical.

“Under the Sea”

Each year, as I watch the rehearsals each week and I see the stories unfold, I am always amazed at how I see the messages within each story lived out among the people who are telling it through spoken word and song.

The message I’m hearing clearly this year is one of “living outside the box.”

I’ve observed a number of instances during this week of dress rehearsals where people are being nudged out of their comfort zones….they’re choosing to live “outside the box” and seem to be enjoying it!

Whether it’s singing a solo or simply being on stage for the first time…or starting a conversation with someone new…or dancing on stage…or sharing creative talent through costumes, makeup or set…or cheering another cast member’s performance…or cuddling a team member’s little baby…or listening to, appreciating and acting on someone’s idea…

Marin Leone as Ariel

In The Little Mermaid, Ariel is a curious young woman with an open mind and an open heart – searching for something new, something exciting, something different, something greater than herself…all the while stretching her limits, broadening her horizons, saying yes to her dreams, pushing through her fears and seeing the wonder and possibilities in people and places that are different than her. In spite of a lot of unknowns and uncertainties, Ariel wants to push herself to swim outside her comfort zone and experience a whole new world.

I like to think that God is asking us to do the same…stretch our limits, broaden our horizons, say yes to our dreams, push through our fears, see the wonder and possibilities in the people places that are different than us…to push ourselves to swim outside our comfort zones and experience a whole new world – the world of opportunities that God has specifically prepared for us!

What are those opportunities for you? I challenge you to stretch your comfort zones, live outside the box and find out!
