Go and Do Likewise

by Guest Ponderer, Leann Thompson, Director of Faith Formation

“Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

(from the Parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10)

Go and do likewise.”

Do you know that the word “Go” is used more than 1500 times in the Bible? In contrast, the word “STAY” is used just 62 times (I’m not sure who counted, but let’s just go with it…).  That little fact tells us something about what God wants us to do, don’t you think?

In 1973, two Princeton psychologists invited a group of seminary students to participate in a study. The students were to prepare a message on the parable of the Good Samaritan. Upon completion of the written assignment, the students were sent individually across campus, supposedly to have their message recorded to be evaluated and graded. Just as each participant was leaving for their “graded” recording, they were told that they were late for the session. In every instance, the student rushed out the door, only to encounter a man slumped in an alley, head down, groaning and coughing – an actor placed in the student’s path by the psychologists. One by one, these seminary students – religious people for sure – who had just read and prepared a lesson on the parable of the Good Samaritan – were put in a position to practice what they planned to preach. The results were alarming – and discouraging. Only 10% of the participants stopped to help, some students literally stepping over the victim as they hurried on their way.

If you’re like me, you want to think that would never be you….hurrying through your day so much that you’re just too busy to stop and help someone in need. We, of course, would never do that intentionally. But are we in such a hurry – so focused on what WE are doing – that we miss the needs of those right in front of us? Perhaps we don’t see the opportunities to “GO and do likewise” that are right there in front of us, waiting for our response.

I was at an event recently and the speaker pointed out a symbol hidden in the FedEx logo.  Do me a favor and look at the image below.   Do you see what’s hidden in the logo?

In the white space between the “E” and the “x” is an arrow. An arrow that I had never noticed before. It’s right there in front of me, but I hadn’t seen it.

Right there in front of me, but I hadn’t seen it.

Right there in front of me, but I hadn’t seen it.

Now, whenever I see that logo, I can’t “not see” the arrow.

I think it’s the same with our opportunities to “GO and do likewise.”
The people who need us are right there in front of us. We simply need to pay attention…..and then respond.

Look for the signs. Look for the arrows pointing you to the needs around you. Maybe this logo can do more than just advertise a company from now on. Maybe it can also be a trigger to remind us to pay attention. To look for the opportunities that are all around us to GO and do likewise.
